PlayStation 5 Controllers - What you should know!

First things first: mute the microphone

Did you know that the PS5 DualSense controllers have an integrated microphone, even if you don't have a headset connected?
The microphone even delivers superb voice quality! The problem? The microphone is activated from the factory and permanently.

This can be really uncomfortable in one situation or another. That's why you should deactivate the microphone NOW at the latest.

There are two ways to disable the microphone:

  • On the one hand, via a button on the PS5 controller. This is not lit when the mic is on and stays lit when the mic is muted. So you can switch it off directly on the DualSense with a push of a button.
  • On the other hand, you can mute the microphone in the console settings and set it there as the new standard. As soon as your PS5 starts, the microphone is always off and the mute button lights up. You can find the setting for this under "Settings / Sound / Microphone / Microphone status when locked in" and then select "Mute".

Haptic feedback & adaptive triggers

Probably the newest thing about the PS5 controllers is the haptic feedback and adaptive trigger buttons, but these are only supported in certain games. Thanks to haptic feedback, the DualSense offers an incredibly immersive gaming experience. Fine motors within the controller simulate different terrain, such as sand, snow or mud, with vibrations of varying strength. Thanks to this feature, you have the feeling of actually moving on real ground and can fully immerse yourself in the game.

In addition to the haptic feedback, it is the adaptive triggers of the shoulder buttons that enable an unknown level of immersion. The DualSense can regulate the resistance of the L2 and R2 buttons to simulate drawing a bow in game or firing a weapon, for example. This feature allows you to be more actively involved in the gameplay and experience real immersion.

Thanks to the Steam implementation, you can also use these features on the PC, apart from the PS5, which is almost impossible to acquire. Until now, it was annoying that you could only install important controller firmware updates via a PlayStation 5. You can now also update your PS5 controller via PC, Windows announced this on Twitter some time ago. This is possible with Windows 10 & 11!

It's really cool, but not for everyone. Just the right thing for casual gamers who like to play story games and want to have an exciting experience. According to reports, however, some of you have found these features to be rather annoying. At the end of the day, everyone has to decide for themselves whether this feature is for you or not.

Can that also be switched off?
Of course, the feature is activated by default, but of course it can also be limited or switched off completely.
"Settings / Accessories / Controller" There you will find the items:

  • "Vibration Intensity"
  • "Intensity of the trigger effect" Now you can choose between strong, moderate, weak and off

Why do you have to switch off the feature completely on King controllers with digital triggers?
Well, you don't drive a Porsche with an E10 either, do you? Joking aside, the digital trigger gives you a direct attack, like a mouse click. You don't need a button that's harder to press for more feeling, you want a direct reaction from the controller, exactly to your opponent.

Charge the controller via the rear USB port

You don't have a charging station for your PS5 controller, then you should be careful now. Then you have to charge the DualSense on the console using the supplied USB-C cable. It's chilled in idle mode when you're not playing. But here some users report problems.

For example, the controller should not charge properly or only for a while - even if you configure the functions available in sleep mode so that the USB ports then supply power permanently and not just 3 hours. If you're having this issue, it's recommended that you use the USB port on the back of the PS5 to charge the Dualsense - not the one on the front. According to reports, the charging problem can be avoided or fixed in this way.

Connect the PS5 controller to the PS4, that's how it works!

If you connect your PS5 controller to the PlayStation 4 with a USB-C cable, it only charges. Using it works less. Instead, you'll need to connect via Remote Play using a PC or laptop. You can see how this works here:

  1. Download “ PS Remote Play ” from Sony official website. Under "Controlling your PS4 console", select the appropriate platform for the download: either Windows PC or Mac.
  2. Install the downloaded software and sign in with your PSN account that you use on your PlayStation 4.
  3. In the meantime, start your PlayStation 4 and log in. Also, connect your PS5 controller to your PC using a USB cable.
  4. In the remote play window, select your PlayStation 4 as the device and wait for an automatic connection to be established immediately. If it isn't, go to your PlayStation 4's settings and click on "Remote Play Connection Settings". There, you select the option "Add device" to receive an eight-digit code. Enter this into Remote Play on the PC.
  5. If the setup worked successfully, the image of your PlayStation 4 should be transferred to the PC. If the control via the PS5 controller also works, you have done everything right!

Note: If you are having trouble due to a poor internet connection, click the gear icon on the left in the Remote Play application before connecting to your PlayStation 4. Since only the smooth controller input via remote play is in the foreground and not the image display on the PC, you can set the resolution to the minimum of 360p under "Video quality for remote play".

Connect the PS5 controller to the PS4 via Bluetooth

It is quite possible to connect your PS5 controller to the PS4 via Bluetooth, but this method also does not allow any control. However, there could be an update in the near future that will allow Bluetooth compatibility. So that you know immediately how to connect the controller in the case of this update, here are the detailed instructions:

  1. Simultaneously press the Create button (top left, next to the touchpad) and the PlayStation button on the PS5 controller for a few seconds. The edge lights on the touchpad should then start blinking.
  2. On your PlayStation 4, follow the path via "Settings" into the "Devices" menu to the "Bluetooth devices" sub-item.
  3. Your PS5 controller should now be listed under "Wireless Controller". Select him
  4. If the PS5 controller then lights up continuously, the connection is established.
